Week 1
Week 1 Reflection: Planting the Seeds of Sustainability 🌱
Date: 4 March 2025
Course: SCSH 1201 – Sustainable Development: Issues, Principles and Practices (Section 4)
Our entrance into SCSH 1201 created the feeling of entering a brand new dimension where all actions, no matter their importance, can affect people across diverse generations. ✨
Our first assignment combined a review of a YouTube video with lecture presentation exploration and classroom teamwork through Padlet for the Ta’aruf (Introduction) session. The basic activities revealed the true meaning of sustainable development (SD).
Lessons that Stuck with Me
Sustainable development represents a concept which enables present needs to be addressed while protecting both present and future access to resources according to the Brundtland Report (1987). 🌍 Sustainability involves much more than embracing trees since it demands that people balance environmental factors with societal development alongside economic stability.
Three big ideas stood out:
Living within Earth’s limits.
The strong relationship between the economy and society exists alongside nature.
Ensuring fairness across generations.
The study investigated how sustainability achieved progress by examining the shifts between Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the expansive Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). I thoroughly enjoyed learning about all seventeen Sustainable Development Goals, including poverty elimination and climate change opposition and gender equality achievement. The scale of this challenge revealed itself while also becoming exciting in the process.
The teaching method of systems thinking made a powerful impression on me. The view from outside enables you to see worldwide problems as an interconnected system without focusing solely on single components for repair. This mental approach will matter for every aspect of our operations, both theoretically and practically in real-time action.
We then looked at the present-day dispute as our final topic.
👉 What should we develop?
👉 What should we sustain?
Thinking critically about my surroundings became possible after this intellectual discussion, which offered unclear responses.
Ta’aruf: Getting to Know Each Other 🌟
The comments about sustainable development offered us considerable inspiration. My classmates noticed the relationship between sustainable development practices and Islamic concepts of Khalifah, "stewards of Earth," which showed me that sustainable development continues living within our Muslim tradition.
Everyone found ways to link their personal targets to SDGs during this event.
Education (SDG 4) for lifelong learning.
Sustainable Cities (SDG 11) and Responsible Consumption (SDG 12) for a greener world.
Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG 16) for those passionate about law and governance.
Every aspiring individual engages in business, law, technology, or social advocacy to leave meaningful contributions to the world.
Final Thoughts 🌟
My quest toward sustainable living began after my first week of high school. The experience demonstrated that environmental sustainability exists right in front of us because we practice it daily through our everyday choices.
Being conscious and ethical, together with having the courage to act, form the core values rather than striving to be flawless.
Together we will become wiser and stronger, and greener in our path 🍃.
See you in Week 2. 🚀

Why not you put pictures in this blog that we can imagine the green that we will sustaining....
ReplyDeleteGreat point! Pictures would surely paint a brighter picture for you guys. I will add visual elements to this piece and future pieces, just as you had suggested. Thanks!
DeleteVerily, we are not only borrowing this world from the future generation, but also being entrusted towards us by the Most Almighty as a responsibility, not to make corruption.
ReplyDeleteTrue words! Great to have you here.
DeleteIs sdg even worth? Will it make a difference? Or just a fancy idea like biodegradable plastic...
ReplyDeleteFew know the future, however, it is best to do our best in our present.
Deletegreat writing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind words!
DeleteWhat a thoughtful and inspiring reflection! 🌱 It's powerful to see how your group connected personal identity with global goals, especially through the lens of Islamic values like *Khalifah*. Recognizing that sustainability isn't just an external goal but something woven into our daily lives and beliefs is a mature and meaningful insight. The way you've aligned your goals with specific SDGs shows clarity and purpose, and your emphasis on conscious, ethical action over perfection is both realistic and empowering. Looking forward to seeing how these ideas evolve in Week 2! 🚀
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for such kind and inspiring comments!! It really touches me so much when I know that the reflection had a resonance with you. We’ve discovered that when we base our definition of sustainability on the concept of Khalifah, we are able to see our duties on a more personal and spiritually oriented level. This has most definitely made us evaluate our deeds in line with the SDGs and act with deliberation – not only as students, but as the caretakers of the Earth.
DeleteWe are thrilled to keep up the ideas and grow together with other people who have the same vision. Your support is even more the motivation for going on. Waiting to listen to your views once again.
